Visiting the Local Scene (Ripe Market & The Courtyard)

I live in a place where summer means staying indoors more. Unless you’re a cactus or a camel, phrases like frolicking in the beach or basking in the sun can be lethal. So before the desert weather starts unleashing it’s full power, I went out and visited these outdoor scenes to take some photos.

Ripe Market

Located in Academy Park, it will reopen every weekend on October according to the website. I visited on its last weekend before closing for the summer. In it were stalls selling locally made and owned accessories, clothes, produce, food trucks, a playground and a petting zoo.

There wasn’t much going on when I went as it was on its last week. On cooler months, there’s suppose to have fun activities aside from the market. I also tried just to window shop and only take pictures because as much as the concept is for a great cause for the community, it is still expensive.

The Courtyard

I stumbled upon this place in a  What's On article. Apparently, it is close by Alserkal Avenue where I get my film developed so I decided to head there to finish the last few shots on my camera before I turn in my film for developing.

It is smaller than it appears on the pictures with a quaint European-inspired courtyard, hence the name of the place. Described as an oasis of art and culture in their Instagram page, its facades and structures are inspired from ancient places – housing art galleries, specialty shops and cafes. The vibe of the place is relaxing with birds chirping and wind chimes in the background.

Cassette Cafe.

Places like these give platform to small local businesses to start up with less risks that otherwise may arise in a conventional commercial scene. Although there’s a challenge in variety and price point, their presence especially in a place where luxury defines lifestyle is refreshing and they themselves add to the variety.

Ironically, when I decided to take photos of these artsy places that’s when I think I did the poorest. I was excited to learn that Portra160 was re-stocked since the last time I used it my photos came out well even in the shadows.

First time using portra160 pictures last year.

Some of the frames in this recent stock came out blurry and underexposed.

I have so far been successful in ignoring the Diderot effect I’m feeling since the last film stocks have been failing. Making sure to shoot in daytime outdoors and using flash even if it is only a little outcast. I guess I’ll have to re-take some of the photos with the past mistakes in mind to avoid and with better equipment. Like the local businesses,  this hobby shall continue to thrive.
