Taking a Sabbatical | Stress Busters Series
Here I am giving my self another chance at writing a series. My stress Busters Series had the littlest viewing activity on my blog and my ofw series was prematurely debunked because of a violent reaction. That made me think of a Sabbatical. You know, to take a break, regroup, rethink things through... For writers, that means taking a break from writing columns and having a ghost writer take their place for the meantime. I don't have that kind of luxury and I'm not a real columnist. Thinking about it, putting a stop on one of the very few healthy activities I do (my brain exercise💪) that I can barely even do on a regular basis is a bit of a head scratcher. A website called investopedia defines it as “a short vacation that gives you time to enhance your academic qualifications, reflect on your accomplishments and decide how to prioritize your life and career”. If its purpose is to enhance, reflect and prioritize, then stopping really isn't the answer for me. Therefore, I shall give my sabbatical my own spin! Here are my goals on my side-sabbatical.
Hone my skills.
I owe it to my self - a brain exercise, that is. (Why I write.) I’m not a genius. I don't come out of the bathroom with an article in my head after doing the number 2 like my sister (“while jebbing”,were her words😂). Giving your self a break is good, but not all the time and not for too long. It wasn't my ofw series that received an ire, but a reader’s comment. The short comment that practically says exactly the same things as my post made more impact than my actual article. I’m not asking for a negative reaction, nor I feel it is right to crave for attention, but it certainly made me think about my writing. I need to push my self further to keep writing, to develop a new and better style, to create an impact, and most importantly, to enrich my mind and soul.
My parents being unintentionally funny.
Find ideas from what I am actively doing.
Be it art, music, fitness, job, your expertise or your current situation - find inspiration in the things that you're truly interested in. One of my most read posts are my parents’ funny anecdotes, I guess, because I know they're true and readers feel it (and it helps that my father's from a really big clan!😊).
Take a dive, go out of my comfort zone.
I can't promise to do this 100%. I'm guilty of always playing safe, and if it isn't obvious, worrying too much of what other people would say. It has been said and written by all successful people, getting out of our comfort zone or thinking out of the box, just simply being brave leads to success.
Do mundane things.
Watch tv or videos, water your plants, read, clean your house, stay in bed... etc. I know I'm going up and down here, from taking courage, pushing your self to do things to now doing ordinary chores, even nothing. As I've said, I'm not a genius. Ideas may float around everywhere, but if I can't see it just yet, then I'll do other things. I want to enjoy this hobby and not be burdened by it. Plus, we have to be responsible individuals and perform our duties, and not be a nuisance to other people.
Writing for me is a respite from my busy and physically demanding job. If you have something that takes your mind off of stressful things like what writing is for me, then that is already your sabbatical.
